Q: My friend says I have an eating disorder, but all I am trying to do is lose 10 pounds. What is the difference between having an eating disorder and being on a diet?
P.H.
A: Having an eating disorder is much more than just being on a diet. An eating disorder is an illness that affects all aspects of a sufferer’s life, is caused by an array of emotional factors and influences, and has overwhelming effects on the people suffering and their loved ones. Eating disorders are about everything that’s going on in one’s life—stress, coping, grief, anger, acceptance, validation, chaos, fear, pain—cleverly (or not so cleverly) concealed behind phrases like “I’m just on a diet”.
Q: Can men have eating disorders?
S.W.
A: Yes, men can have eating disorders. The statistics show that 1 million males in the United States struggle with eating disorders. Men with eating disorders are more likely to exercise to rid their bodies of unwanted calories, whereas women are more likely to practice a purging behavior. This makes it harder to identify men who have an eating disorder. Avalon Centers offers outpatient and partial hospitalization to both men and women.

I have heard about Avalon Centers from a friend who went there and she's doing great. I live in Vermont. If I came to Avalon, where would I stay?

Tell me how Avalon Centers is different than other programs. I'm thinking about coming to your program at Avalon Centers. I live in Pittsburg.
My college roommate has lost a lot of weight and she's making me promise not to tell her parents. Could she talk to someone at Avalon Centers for Eating Disorders? Would you keep it confidential?
Can you tell me about the living arrangements you have for girls from outside of NY? My daughter is 21 and she lives in Kentucky. Please give us some details about your living arrangements. How much do they cost at Avalon Centers? What do the rooms include? Is there security?

When does my weight loss make me an anorexia person? I'm 23 years old, 5'7" and I weigh 89 pounds. My friends say I'm there now, but I think they are wrong and should mind their own business. I think you can be skinny and healthy. What do you think at Avalon Centers?
Belinda
I saw Avalon Centers on Dr. Keith Albow TV show. Do you take people from outside of New York? Where is Williamsville anyway? Where do people stay at night?

Dear Belinda,
I am very concerned with your current weight. At 5'7" you should weigh approximately 135#, thereofore you are extremely underweight. However, to be diagnosed as "anorexic" you would have to fit certain criteria. I urge you to call Avalon Centers at (866) 814-0999 to set up an evaluation.
Take care,
Elizabeth
